Question:

How do I uninstall Desktop To Go?

Answer:

  1. Go to the Start Menu, to Control Panels.
  2. Double Click on the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  3. A window will come up, showing a list of most of your programs you have on your PC.
  4. Select Desktop To Go.
  5. Click Add/Remove.

If you encounter an error or crash during the uninstall process, there are a few alternative methods you can use to remove Desktop To Go:

Method 1:

  1. Quit all applications.
  2. Follow all the steps described on the page when encountering Installation Errors (see below).
  3. Reinstall Desktop To Go.
  4. Uninstall Desktop To Go per the above directions. There may have been a problem with the initial installation that caused a corrupt installation log file to be written. This installation log file is necessary for the uninstall as well.

Method 2:

If you still encounter an error, you can manually delete the files and registry entries. Do not attempt this if you are not familiar with using the Registry Editor.

The process of removing Desktop To Go from a user's system involves deleting several different components:

1. Files from C:\Pilot or C:\Palm, or wherever you have HotSync.exe installed:

dvAddCnd.dll
dvDatCnd.dll
dvMemCnd.dll
dvTodCnd.dll
LocalDV.dll
OL.SAM
PilotSAM.SAM
PsCmpr.dll
SchPlus.SAM
TransMgr.dll
DataViz (folder)

2. Registry keys:

The registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\DataViz can be deleted in its entirety.

There are 4 other registry keys that DTG adds in order to tap into HotSync. The best way to uninstall them is to follow these directions:

  1. Choose Run from the Start menu. Click Browse.
  2. Navigate to PilotCFG.exe (usually C:\Program Files\Desktop To Go). The program icon be gray with two white arrows.
  3. Click Open.
  4. Move your cursor so that it appears after the text that appears in the Open field, and the text that appears in the Open field is not highlighted (you may have to click twice).
  5. Type " -R" (space-dash-R).
  6. Click OK.

It will appear as if the program did nothing, but in fact it will remove those 4 registry keys. In the simplest scenario, they would be:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\U.S. Robotics\Pilot Desktop\Application0
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\U.S. Robotics\Pilot Desktop\Application1
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\U.S. Robotics\Pilot Desktop\Application2
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\U.S. Robotics\Pilot Desktop\Application3

However, they can be any numbers besides 0 through 3, depending on how HotSync is configured before that. PilotCFG.exe (the Desktop To Go application) when run with a " -R " is smart enough to remove those keys and then, if necessary, move other keys around in order to fill the gaps (e.g. if there is an Application4 in the above scenario, it will be moved to Application0, etc.). You should not have any trouble running PilotCFG.exe -R, but in case you do or in case you would prefer to remove these keys manually, you can identify the Desktop To Go registry keys by opening:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\U.S. Robotics\Pilot Desktop and looking at each of the Application# keys. Ours will have a DataViz value on the right side window.

3. Folders:

C:\Program Files\Desktop To Go\PalmPilot
C:\Windows\StartMenu\Programs\Desktop To Go for PalmPilot
