How do I activate RoadSync for Android?

To activate RoadSync, you need to purchase and install the RoadSync Full Version Key application from the Android Market. The Full Version Key is a small app which activates the "RoadSync 2.0 Main App (Demo)" application so it will not expire. If the demo app is installed first, it will be immediately activated once you purchase & install the Full Version Key. Or, if the Full Version Key is installed first, it will prompt you to download the RoadSync 2.0 Main App when you open it (once the main/demo app is installed, it will be immediately activated as the Full Version).

Follow these steps to get the RoadSync Full Version Key:

  1. Launch the Market app on your Android phone.
  2. Select the Search menu.
  3. Search for "RoadSync".
  4. Select "RoadSync Full Version Key" and follow the steps to purchase and install it.

Once the Full Version Key app is installed on your phone, RoadSync will be activated. The Full Version Key must remain installed for RoadSync to remain activated.

How do I determine my Server Settings?

RoadSync connects directly to your Microsoft Exchange Server over a secure SSL (https) data connection via the Exchange ActiveSync protocol. Unlike other push e-mail solutions, RoadSync does not require any middleware server or server software. Mobile access is enabled by default but controlled by your IT Administrator, so you may need to contact them to obtain the required settings.

If you are familiar with Outlook Web Access (OWA) to access your Exchange Server data from an internet browser, these settings are often the same for RoadSync.

User name:

  • Your user name is most likely the name you use to log onto your computer.
  • The user name is not case-sensitive and may include spaces.
  • If you have a hosted Exchange account, the user name would most likely be the same as the one you use to access your email on your computer.

Password:

  • Your password is most likely the password you use to log-on to your computer.
  • The password is case-sensitive.
  • If you have a hosted Exchange account, the password would be the same as the one you use to access your email on your computer.

Server Name:

The Exchange Server settings require a publicly accessible server name for the front-end Exchange Server:
The server name will not include http://.
The server name will not include other web address sections such as slashes ( / ) or '.html'.
The server name will be in the form 'exchange.mycompany.com' where 'exchange' is determined by your IT staff and 'mycompany' is the name of your company. (Alternatively, an IP address can be used. This IP address must point to the front-end Exchange Server.)

Domain:

The "Domain" field of your settings may or may not be required, depending on your network configuration. If you are using an Exchange account from your company, you can find your domain by completing these steps on your computer:
Press Ctrl-Alt-Del on your keyboard.
Select Lock Computer.
Press Ctrl-Alt-Del on your keyboard.
Select Options >>.
The text in "Log on to" is the domain.

Alternatively, you can log-off of your computer account and when you return to the log-in screen, you should see the domain you belong to. If you are unsure about your domain, please contact your IT staff. If you are using a hosted Exchange account, please contact your Exchange host for this information.

What is a root / SSL certificate (for Series 60 devices)?

All smartphones include a series of Certificate Authority (CA) root certificates issued by various companies, including VeriSign, Thawte, GTE, and RSA Data. The purpose of these CA root certificates is to provide a trusted "third-party" to verify the ownership of Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificates issued to companies and websites. The function of the CA root certificate is similar to that of a Notary Public who witnesses a signature and provides third-party verification between two parties.

For security, organizations often wish to use secure connections (SSL) when syncing or allowing access to their servers. RoadSync uses root certificates and SSL to make a secure connection to your account on a Microsoft Exchange Server.

Custom root certificates

If your organization prefers to use its own root certificate, rather than one issued by a root certificate authority, you may attempt to install a custom root certificate on to the phone.

Installing a custom root certificate

NOTE: Not all types of root certificates are supported by the phone.

  1. Obtain a copy of the root certificate being used from your IT department (usually in the form of a .cer file). If you or your IT department are uncertain how to obtain the custom root certificate, follow these steps:

    1. Open a web browser on your computer and log into your Exchange account via Outlook Web Access (OWA).
    2. Click (or double-click) the padlock icon, normally found along the bottom or top of the browser window.
    3. This will bring up the certificate information for the CA used on this site.
    4. Go to the Details tab and click the "Copy to File" button. This will start the export process.
    5. Export the file as a DER encoded binary (the default).

  2. Send this file to your S60 phone via Bluetooth, IR, etc (or, copy the file to the handheld memory or a memory card by using Nokia PC Suite on the desktop, then open that file on the phone).
  3. If downloaded to the phone via Bluetooth or IR, open the file from the Inbox in the Messaging application.

Using a device-recognized root certificate

You may obtain the front-end server certificate from one of the certificate authorities that are represented by the root certificates that are included on the device. A list of root certificates that are pre-installed on your phone can be accessed in the following manner:

  1. From the main screen of the phone, open the Menu
  2. Open the Tools folder, then select Settings
  3. Open the General settings, and select Security
  4. Select Certificate Management to view and manage the digital certificates stored in your device
